As you may have guessed from my previous two posts, I've been constantly arguing with myself over the old (very old, apparently) "free will vs. determinism" debate. I've done a little more reading (not just on Wikipedia) about it, and I've come to realize that my perception that there's "determinism everywhere I go" is rather a false one. Sure, there are many scientific and philosophical theories which try to discredit free will as a viable reality, but at the same time, there...

Nothing more than a helpless pawn...

When one feels like a helpless pawn of the universe, what does one do?

Do they simply live life in ignorance of their pain, only letting it silently build up in the background?

Do they end their life, hoping that there is some higher, more meaningful existence "beyond the grave"?

Do they bitterly accept it, and live their lives as they feel they should, i.e. that they really aren't special, and that they really aren't "them", they're...

This is my first blog post, ever. Seriously, I've never done this kind of thing before, not even outside of LQ, so this might not seem very "bloggy", or whatever you want to call it...

What set me off to start writing my own blog was a recent thread posted in the General section of the forums: "Learning in the Linux Community".

Seriously, any kind of study like this rings alarm bells in my head. I end up seeing it as nothing more than yet another...

Posted 12-31-2009 at 02:32 PM by ofaring (Debian, This That and the Other)

I'm writing this because when I read over my previous rant, it struck me as too harsh and reactionary. I won't take it down, because I believe it illustrates a valid point, but I need to add clarification.

This subject interests me because I've always believed that it's better to learn why the formula works than to just memorise the formula. Back a couple of years when I was in high school, I worked much harder at sciences than mathematics. Consequently, I got to the point...

Zero Reply Threads: Rant

Posted 12-25-2009 at 07:43 PM by ofaring (Debian, This That and the Other)

I am using a Linux distro: Debian. I enjoy it, a lot. I love the flexibility of the system, and when I need info, I find it. How? By searching and taking the time to educate myself. But masses of the questions asked on this forum are idiotic and unnecessary. I can't imagine what it must be like for those individuals who've been using Linux since the early days. I know that there are users on this forum who are intelligent, rational people. I also know that some of them prefer one BSD edition or...
