This is how I installed the nvidia driver in Fedora 17 for 64 bit x86 without using a 3rd party repository. My experience will not work with all configurations.
This process creates a custom bootable thumbdrive with the latest available Fedora 17 software. In addition, common repositories are preconfigured, and the list of software packages on the currently running system is used as the basis for the thumbdrive image.

Those of us who use Ubuntu will be aware that Ubuntu has got a "partner repository", a repository which contains proprietary software which, by nature, cannot be included in the main repository. It is an idea which I personally think is excellent, as it allows software which goes against the principals of Open Source to be included for the benefit of standard users.
