Raid Root System
Posted 09-08-2011 at 06:57 AM by SukiiPooru
My first attempts at a raid root system failed in that the raid was created but failed to boot because raids were not being assembled by initrd.
I am having another attempt by following this procedure:
http://www.texsoft.it/index.php?c=ha...d-squeeze&l=it
It takes a while to assemble raid6 arrays ... be patient

OK, grub loaded but was dropped into initramfs shell after it gave up waiting for root device.
The rootfs raid6 has failed to assemble.
The installer added the raid modules to grub.cfg and marked raid1 boot partition as root.
I issued;
mdadm --examine --brief --scan --config=partitions
and arrays were detected but aren't run,to do that issue:
mdadm --examine --brief --scan --config=partitions>/etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
mdadm --assemble --scan
I then dropped out of shell by issuing:
<ctrl-D>
The system then booted into my base system on raid root file system!
Now to fix the non-assembling of raid by initrd.Posted 09-08-2011 at 08:32 PM by SukiiPooru -
Once booted into system as root I tasksel'd my graphical system and so on, logged in as normal user on next console. Then did a `startx -- :1` to get into X. In there I was able to examine the situation, the problem is /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf has only the default set up of hertzner, so again I ran:
mv /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf.~0~
mdadm --examine --brief --scan --config=partitions>/etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
vim /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf
where I added the all the top lines from original except those beginning with ARRAY... above my ARRAY..., saved the file, added a few extra packages, rebooted and all is fine.
Who said root filesystem on raid was difficult?Posted 09-08-2011 at 11:11 PM by SukiiPooru
