Oh, the Printing Thing...

Posted 09-15-2009 at 06:44 PM by SrDorothy

Well, turns out I have to "install the printer" to at least one of the Mepis computers each and every morning...or none of them can access it.

But that's better than doing the install wiz on all of them, or so I tell myself. I even whipped up a guide on how to do the install wizard, in case I need to be away from home. How crazy is that?

There must be a better way! If you know it, feel free to tell me!

Printing Saga Continues...

Posted 08-17-2009 at 08:39 PM by SrDorothy

I took my printing problems to our local GNU/Linux SIG (part of Olympia Microcomputer User Group) a while back. Basically, I had an HP LJ 1300 connected to a WinXP machine and shared on our network. But the WinXP kept losing its connection with the printer...no idea how or why.

So someone at the Linux group had a small print server he said I could try. I set it up, installed the software to the WinXP machine, and voila! All the other computers (mostly Mepis 6.5, one Win98) found...

Mepis and Cups

Posted 05-03-2009 at 11:13 PM by SrDorothy

I've been running Mepis 6.5 on a couple of computers that are 'in-between'--not the slowest but also not the fastest. And generally it has been a good choice. Once I figured out that I had to unmark the non-free flash plugin when I did updates, the multimedia worked fine. I usually check 3 websites: jigzone.com, youtube.com and an online mahjong site--if all those work, I'm good.

Recently, though, I found that one of these computers was not able to print to the networked printer...

Windows Secrets Touts Puppy Linux...!

Posted 03-22-2009 at 12:48 PM by SrDorothy

As I was reading Windows Secrets today, which I subscribe to since we still use a number of Windows machines, I came across a discussion of Windows 98 on old machines and using it for special purposes--but someone was asking about whether Win 98 supports USB. I immediately thought of Puppy Linux which we are using on an old machine --and here is part of Fred Langa's response (the March 19, 2009 Windows Secrets newsletter):

"If you use old hardware for normal day-to-day tasks...

Update on Rapla

Posted 02-03-2009 at 03:22 PM by SrDorothy

Checked in with my friend "who knows all"...and got a reminder that nobody knows everything, and/or has the time to learn everything. He is more familiar with php than java, so he had me look for programs that are written in php. I found a number, so picked out a few and we plan to download and try them one by one. This is all in aid of bringing our retreat house room-booking up to date...So for now Rapla is out and we'll see what else might be in! This is not to say Rapla might not...
