Mepis and Cups

Posted 05-03-2009 at 11:13 PM by SrDorothy

I've been running Mepis 6.5 on a couple of computers that are 'in-between'--not the slowest but also not the fastest. And generally it has been a good choice. Once I figured out that I had to unmark the non-free flash plugin when I did updates, the multimedia worked fine. I usually check 3 websites: jigzone.com, youtube.com and an online mahjong site--if all those work, I'm good.

Recently, though, I found that one of these computers was not able to print to the networked printer (i.e., attached to a windows computer and shared). Don't know when it happened since no one complained...8^( Somehow the printer info on that computer had gotten associated with wrong ip numbers (we use static ip addresses)--a couple of different ones! And there was no way I could find to change the url or to delete the printer. Ugh.

So finally I downloaded Mepis 8.0 and checked it out--then installed it. Jigzone won't load the puzzles--but everything else works, especially the printer! So I'll see how that goes in actual use-- and maybe load the other Mepis machine with 8.0 too.

This media stuff is weird...or said a different way: I sure don't have much understanding of it! All the info on jigzone.com says it should work with an older version of Firefox than I have now, but I do know that things may get broken or out of whack when updated...so maybe that is what happened. However, Mepis info says the multimedia stuff works "out of the box." Um. I guess not always....
