Western Digital replaces bricked drive, OK to buy.

Posted 09-06-2012 at 09:20 AM by Skaperen

Buying Western digital drives is back ON. WD has come through, finally, and replaced the bricked drive mentioned in my previous x 2 post here.

I hope the tech support people at WD get an update about how to handle firmware upgrade issues so they can avoid things like this in the future. New firmware, at least if they recommend it, should be supported for at least as long as their drives currently being sold are.

In the mean time, engineering should figure out how to design drives where at least the firmware update part won't brick itself (e.g. a separate EPROM runs first to check for update attachment signature).
