FOSS projects should not use mailing lists for help

Posted 09-04-2012 at 09:58 AM by Skaperen

Mailing lists are fine among a limited group of developers. But this is a bad idea for offering help to refer to a mailing list.

Mailing lists are limiting submissions to their subscribers, or not. These days, no one, not even hard core developers, would want their email box polluted by spammers. So that means no open (anyone can send) mailing lists. But that also means anyone just needing some quick help has to become a subscriber to the mailing list, first. Not only is that a hassle...

Why to NOT buy Western Digital

Posted 08-29-2012 at 03:28 PM by Skaperen

Why not? Because Western Digital will NOT support their firmware upgrades:

In this case, the drive itself was out of warranty. However, the Western Digital software and web site proceeded to urge the owner to upgrade the firmware. Then the drive running on the new firmware did not work.

It seems Western Digital wants to brick your out-of-warranty drives...

Newegg Boycott Back On

Posted 06-14-2012 at 02:53 PM by Skaperen

It seems Newegg management is playing games with people. It appears they really do intend to refuse returns by future customers when another OS is installed by that customer.

http://consumerist.com/2012/06/so-do...cy-or-not.html

It should not matter what OS is on the computer. Why? Because they should NEVER be reselling any computer to another customer without first wiping off the hard drive and putting the original OS...

Put a Hold on that Newegg Boycott

Posted 06-13-2012 at 11:48 AM by Skaperen

It seems Newegg was quick to deal with the situation they had, which was reported yesterday, regarding a rejection of return of a computer that had Linux installed on it.

I'm still concerned about their procedures for wiping off used data storage devices before reselling them to customers, inside a computer or not.

Time to boycott Newegg

Posted 06-12-2012 at 12:57 PM by Skaperen

No computer that was returned from ANY customer should EVER be resold (or the hard drive thereof) with whatever data that customer left on it. There could be many bad things on there, including viruses, trojans, kiddie porn, and communication gateways for terrorists (yeah, gotta toss in the T-word somewhere).

This means wipe the disk completely and re-image the original OEM operating system in its initial state (ready to ask for your name and such).

Newegg appears...
