So it turns out Slack 12.2 didn't really fix the card. However I found a driver (tg3) on Hardware4Linux.info so will try modprobe -vv tg3 next time eth0 disappears. Not sure if I would need to do anything else. If all else fails, perhaps it's a firmware issue as suggested.
Have downloaded the ATI vga module, will set that up later.
I forgot to mention that I figured out how to make lilo boot straight into Slackware - just comment out 'prompt' in lilo.conf and then run 'lilo' as root from console. Obviously you should only do this once you know your system is bootable (probably undo it after any dangerous kernel changes.) In fact I'm guessing the best policy would be to prompt and have a short timer, to select an old kernel.
