Hi. I'm a Unix Administrator, mathematics enthusiast, and amateur philosopher. This is where I rant about that which upsets me, laugh about that which amuses me, and jabber about that which holds my interest most: Unix.

Book Collection

I've been busy assembling a good library of computing books (stuff that directly interests me, of course...so you won't find Java or such in this list), and I would like to get some input (in the event I've overlooked critical "must-have" books). I don't own all of these (yet), but I've been buying them left and right as I can afford it (I usually buy one or two each payperiod, used on Amazon...as long as the book is readable and not too banged up, I'm game). The (not-yet-complete) list...

Project Paradox

I've started development on my own operating system. I've achieved "hello world OS" status so far (boots up and prints a message to the console), and I've started working on core functions within the kernel to make actual kernel development easier.

So I'm going to use this space as something of a progress update as I go. Who knows, perhaps one day some of the crazy ideas I have on OS design will come to light.

Time will tell.

vpnc auto-reconnect script

A native Cisco VPN client doesn't exist for OpenBSD, so I wrote this little script to make vpnc more useful. It detects when the vpn tunnel fails and re-establishes it.

Code:
#!/bin/ksh

# This script was developed on OpenBSD with ksh as the primary shell.

# set INT_SERVER to a list of 5 ping-able machines behind your vpn gateway
# ip addresses can be repeated if you have less than five machines.
set -A INT_SERVER 192.168.1.16 192.168.1.201

RuntimeError: maximum recursion depth exceeded

Ok, so this is another philosophy post (sorry for the misleading title...if you're playing around with recursion in Python I should hope you know how to fix the error message in the title =)

Anyhow, I posted yesterday about determinism and free will. Today I'm going to follow up with the mind. In contemporary knowledge, the mind is roughly equivalent to the "meta-brain"...the activity that takes place "within" the brain. Since the dawn of time people have wondered...

Synergistic Duality...the philosophy

There are a few bloggers here with a heavy interest in philosophy that post interesting and thought-provoking ideas on determinism, the soul, the mind, etc...so I figure, what the hey...I'll take a crack at one of them (determinism). More to come later =)

So let's step to...

The most basic act the human mind is capable of is differentiation. We naturally divide wholeness into components and draw lines between related parts. It's hard-wired into our "circuitry"...
