Problems with new external hard disk

Bought a new Western Digital Elements Portable Hard Drive 250GB recently, purchased from Bond and Bond 2009-03-04 NZ$129 (see /questions/blog/robertvi-358970/update-on-external-hardisk-1731/ for an update on this post)

Failed to mount under ubuntu hardy, dmesg gave only:
usb 4-8: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 21

Googled for this dmesg (minus the address number), found:

http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-898939.html

Which suggested disabling the ehci_hcd module:

sudo rmmod ehci_hcd

Ran this command after disconnecting the device. Then reconnected. Now able to use the disk. The link suggests that this fix may reduce the speed to a USB1 device.

My friend bought the identical model external HDD from the same shop on the same day, but her's works fine when I plug it in: dmesg gave:

Tested both by copying 30GB of files. Hers copies at about 20MB/sec with ehci enabled, mine at about 1MB/sec with ehci disabled!
