Why I Love Linux

There's all the usual reasons like "Free as in speech" and "Free as in beer" but for me, a couple of the reasons I love Linux are the regular discovery of great little apps that I find are already installed as standard when I start investigating how to perform a particular task. For example, I downloaded The Cathedral and the Bazaar as a PostScript. I couldn't find a reader for my Nokia N900, so after a little investigation I converted it using ps2pdf which I found already installed on my main desktop PC.

The other reason I want to mention here is the day to day stability! I generally keep three devices running all the time. These being my (Multiple user.) main desktop which I suspend to disk overnight, my test machine that stays up 24/7 and my N900. All three have current uptimes of approaching one month. Now that sort of stability probably can be achieved with other operating systems, but I doubt the systems in question would remain that stable month after month. In my experience, Linux starts out rock solid and does not degrade over time. Or at least if it does, it's a very slow process! As I use Debian based (SimplyMEPIS on my desktops.) systems, I'm not exactly a frequent, as in Ubuntu 6 months, upgrader so fresh installs are few and far between.

Out of interest, I posted a question on Linkedin regarding the reliability of various smartphones. Simplistically, the Linux based (Android etc.)phones got the most consistently favourable comments along with a single mention of an iPhone that had been jailbroken, followed by Blackberrys and one or two others like a Samsung device. The most consistently negative comments seemed to be aimed at Windows Mobile 6.5. This would seem to bear out my experiences that a Linux based machine won't let you down.
