Linux is viable on the desktop!

Posted 04-20-2010 at 05:36 AM by rich_c

Ken (Helios) posted this piece about the perception and awareness of GNU/Linux. To me, it highlights two groups of people who need to be reached. One group isn't even aware of an alternative to Linux. Well, if you were one of those people, if you've got as far as reading this then I guess you are now aware...

The other group are aware of Linux but believe it to be too hard... Perhaps they have had a bit of Microsoft poison dripped in their ear. Well, I don't believe it is too...

Internet health tax?

Posted 03-03-2010 at 03:26 PM by rich_c

Somewhat related to my previous post, I was reading this with interest. I saw a comment on the same story that pretty much likened Microsoft Windows users to smokers. They risk their own health and by 'passive smoking' (i.e. the unfiltered garbage they spew out.) the health of others. So, to continue with that analogy, any tax should be on the sale of Microsoft products which should also come with a 'health' warning. (I'm thinking NSA/SELinux here...)

Another interesting and far less biased development I saw recently was this. Seems...

An era drawing to a close.

Posted 02-24-2010 at 01:00 PM by rich_c

Well, today is seeing the system I cut my IT industry teeth on the best part of 2 decades ago finally fading away. My first IT job was looking after Stratus midrange systems in a financial company. The hardware got upgraded over the years to what ended up as a top of the range Stratus Continuum setup. I just started the end of day processing on it and the application guys have obviously cut great chunks out of the batch as it all but finished in a few minutes where it used to take all night....

I'm a PC...

Posted 01-12-2010 at 11:23 AM by rich_c

Further to my blog entry the other day about the standard Windows desktop being useless, a way of putting that right occurred to me. Basically, what Windows needs, imho, is an app store! I think it’s the only way Microsoft could provide users with a desktop that is almost instantly usable without running into issues with accusations of abusing their large market share. This would undoubtedly happen if they were to provide apps pre-installed.

So right there on the desktop, you’d...
