All your base are belong to them!

Posted 09-14-2010 at 03:47 AM by rich_c

There was an incident at work last night which raised a couple of points that, for me, make it rather baffling that proprietary software is so widely used! The incident was apparently caused by the expiration of a software licence. This leads immediately to my first point of bafflement.

Why are people and organisations willing to put up with the licensing model that basically means you don't own your apps, but merely rent them. Most of the time, this means that if for whatever...

Viva la difference. Again?

Posted 09-09-2010 at 09:34 AM by rich_c

Following on from a couple of other people’s blog posts debating whether the wide variety of available Linux distros is a good or bad thing, I thought I’d do a quick comparison of three fairly similar distros. There are subtle differences that might suit some users’ needs so that one is, for them, better than the others.

I just read an article about how ISPs 'exaggerate' line speeds by claiming an average of 6.7mbps whereas the reality is around 3-4 on average. It kinda reminded me of going into an electrical store and buying some sort of HiFi/music related kit. They'll claim the amp will deliver 100 watts for example. Yeah. Peak to peak! I can't remember the exact formula for converting PP to a more 'realistic' measurement but I seem to recall the answer was somewhere around 2/3 - 1/2 of the claimed figure....

A chance discovery.

Posted 08-01-2010 at 11:20 PM by rich_c

For a bit of devilment, I thought I'd head over to bing.com and search for Linux. (Go on give it a go, you know know you want to mess with their heads... ) Well, as it happens I 'discovered' an interesting link. http://linux.co.uk
