First problem... Getting the computer to boot.

Posted 04-03-2006 at 11:47 AM by kf4otn

Okay, so I come in this morning and boot up the computer I'm going to be using for linux. Easy, right? So the system gets locked up during the boot-up process. Just stops. All I can do is restart the box and see if it will come up the next time. Maybe I need a newer computer.

Linux Green Horn!

Posted 04-03-2006 at 05:23 AM by bongski55

Well, I want a different name for the common "newbie" and for want of a better one I chose "green horn".

I started linux just by curiosity when Mandrake 7.2(I can't be sure of the version-it's been quite a while since!) was included in a UK based pc magazine accompanying CD. It was a limited version of the distro since I learned later on that Mndrake usually comes in 3 CDs. So without knowing anything about linux I just installed what I had. Luckilly...

First Entry...

Posted 04-03-2006 at 02:51 AM by tedl_nancy

Hi,

I'm a real noob to linux, but am real keen on moving to opensource. I've been moving myself over gradually by creating a partition on my laptops hard-drive to install various linux distros. Not seriously using them, just playing around. Seeing which one is easiest to get going with. Which one might eventually replace my windows os.

On the Win partition I've been trying to move to completely opensource software, but I settle for free sometimes. So I'm running XP...

My First Blog in LinuxQuestions.org

Posted 04-03-2006 at 12:32 AM by cjpangilinan

This is my first blog in linuxquestions.org.

In Oct of 2005, I started using linux. Back then i had a backgroung in linux, since I bought a book about linux installation and administration. It comes with a publishers edition of redhat 6.0. But in October of 2005, I used Fedora Core 2. since Red Hat stop in Red Hat 9.0. And then, I became aware of the other ditributions. Some say slackware is better, some say Debian, some say Gentoo. A friend told me to visit the linuxiso.org site...

The Blog Starts

Posted 04-02-2006 at 11:45 PM by Freemor

Hi Everyone,

I've decided that since LQ is generous enough to offer this space and since I presently have some time to devote to such endevours That I would write a Blog about Life in Ubuntu 6.04 (Dapper Drake).

A quick bit of background first.
I have been using Linux for many years and Ubuntu since 5.04
The upgrade path I took to dapper was editing /etc/apt/sources.list
and then apt-get dist-upgrading (in init 1).
I think...
