Snort init script still not working...

Posted 06-04-2007 at 09:42 AM by unixfool

Yeah, I thought I'd nailed this, but there is still an issue with my Slackware machine's Snort startup/shutdown script. For some reason, it'll start fine, will not shut down cleanly and will error out. The script will not start on its own and requires manual intervention (dunno why). I'll have to add some debugging code to it so that I can track the issue. It must be some flag that I'm using when implementing 'ps', because that's the only difference between the two scripts (the OpenBSD and Slackware)....

Old - Malicious IP scanning

Posted 06-04-2007 at 09:41 AM by unixfool

IP, an IP that belongs to, has been very active lately. The machine has been compromised twice in 30 days and does a multitude of scans. Last month I reported this IP to and the machine was eventually taken offline (after waiting over two weeks). I reported it again this weekend when I noticed the IP was scanning against port 80 on my public server.

I Created some scripts for Snort

The OpenBSD script works solidly.

The Slackware script works sporadically and I've no idea how to debug it (although I haven't tried 'strace' yet). It appears to work manually every time, but when run as a cron job, it's sometimes, seemingly randomly, doesn't restart. The cron job runs every hours but because it sometimes doesn't start,...

Operating systems

Posted 06-01-2007 at 04:34 PM by gordon58

I have so many running now, but a few stick out as superior. Xandros, Suse 10.1, Red hat 5.0, Edubuntu are all very good. Suse is not quite as stable on a desktop as it is on a laptop. I have found Knoppix and Puppy to be fun and smart. Debian wouldnot load, and neither would a few others. end.
