Thanks for trying to help. It sounds easy enough but, when I open the terminal how do I drag the file in?
There is nothing there but my name and cursor. I don't mean to sound so stupid, but when it comes to this computer, I AM.

desktop recording

recordmydesktop is a good thing. Use it.
I have a directory /home/<myusername>/Movies which is the place I keep the screencasts I record.
So, open a Terminal, then
Code:
cd /home/<myusername>/Movies
recordmydesktop
It starts recording as you can see from the flickering mouse pointer.
Record happily and when done come back to the terminal (simply Alt+Tab till you get the Terminal) and pres Ctrl+C
Then it will count up from 1% to 100%.
