Making a Local Area File Server

Well I finally bought some Ram (1GB DDR 333) from newegg for my old computer (AMD AthlonXP 2400+ 120GB HDD, 40GB HDD). There's no need for an OS install since Gentoo is already installed. And there is a lot of data on the dead (as of now since it has no ram) computer that I value highly.

Would directories defined as SAMBA shares be sufficient enough for a Private File server?

Of course, I need to configure the system to be access from a different system for system upgrades...

Changes to Changes

Posted 03-08-2009 at 05:47 AM by brianL

Changed my mind about trying newer versions of previously tried distros (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSuse, etc). They didn't grab me then, so it's unlikely they will now. I'll keep using Debian, for the contrast it offers to Slackware. I will try Arch, Gentoo, and LFS + BLFS. And I still want a desktop with more all-round clout.

telnet into a device in /dev

You'll have to set the baud rate, parity, etc., but that's worked for me in the past, for similar situations.
Thanks that seems to be working.

Web design.

Posted 03-07-2009 at 03:43 PM by nenpa8lo

Recently I have started to learn webdesign - and amount of languages that I have to gather is scarry. HTML, XML, PHP, JS next mySQL queries and also would be nice to know AJAX and.... That is enough. Why this could not be simpler? One language, one standard and lets keep moving.

Distribution confusion

Posted 03-06-2009 at 07:54 PM by Indymaynard

Recently, I had to make a tough decision. Every Linux user will face this particular decision at least once whether they know it or not. I guess that the hardest part about it was that I didn't know if my choice would be good or bad. Even more frustrating was the fact that I believe that no one should have to face this choice.

For at least four years, Fedora has been my distribution of choice. It began when I tried Red Hat 9 for the first time. Honestly, my first experience was terrible...
