Magnetic tape is a non-volatile storage medium consisting of a magnetic coating on a thin plastic strip. Nearly all recording tape is of this type, whether used for video, audio storage or general purpose digital data storage using a computer.

Linux (and other Unixish system) use mt command to control magnetic tape drive operation. You need to use mt command while working with tape drive. It allows you to reading and writing to tape.

Relative Newbie Tries Things Out

I've only been using linux for a year or so, and I don't expect to set the world on fire with this blog, but I'm having lots of experiences as I try and work with different distros, and I want this to be a kind of diary so I can remember how I did things.

If it helps anyone to read it and join in, you're welcome, and I'd be glad to hear your advice if anyone sees me struggling with a problem they know how to fix.

Moving Root To A Larger Partition

I wanted to set up the root hard drive on a 20GB partition. It was previously on a 10GB partition. The first thing I did was to make sure the 20GB partition was empty. Then my plan was to copy all important files to the new partition and change the Master Boot Record so that it pointed to the new copy. Along the way I'd have to change the /etc/fstab file along with the /boot/grub/menu.lst file.
