messedup screen resolution

Posted 12-14-2008 at 11:55 AM by bhupendra

Hi
Recently I set the screen resolution of my ubuntu 8.10 too high. On rebooting, I got the message "signal out of range"; i could not get the desktop. After an extensive google search, I found the following solution for which I am grateful to a lot of kind souls. I rebooted the pc with a live cd of Ubuntu 8.10. This gave me access to my hard drive. I navigated to /etc/x11/xorg.conf under nautilus and added the following script to the file.
Section "Monitor"...

Me and IT 2

Posted 12-14-2008 at 08:05 AM by brianL

There have been one or two changes since my first blog entry. Got a slightly used (ex-demo) laptop: an ASuS F5RL, with XP Pro already installed. First thing I did was resize it, not sure how long it's going to stay on. The first distro I tried on it was Ubuntu 8.04, which worked perfectly. That was just for testing. Slackware, my personal favourite (in case I haven't mentioned that already ), went on next. To get on the 'net (wired) I had to get the atl2 module; I haven't got round to sorting...

Mmmm Fluxbox

Posted 12-14-2008 at 02:25 AM by lumak (Lumak's Guide to Random Things)

Why didn't anybody tell me fluxbox is everything that blackbox could be with active development. Every feature I tried to add to blackbox my self (basically through scripts) is already in fluxbox and then some!

I tried openbox briefly because the reviews and descriptions made it sound more of what I wanted... BUT I'm sold on fluxbox now. what was the last feature that I found in it that spurred this message? A customizable tool bar + system tray to-boot! It also doesn't freak out...

Thanks jeremy, this is easiest blog I have ever seen to use. I guess by now about a month after this LQ blog started all the bugs have frozen over.

Linux users misunderstood by their own families

Posted 12-13-2008 at 03:03 PM by phantom_cyph

As Linux users, it seems we are oppressed by the mind control Microsoft seems to have over people. Many users, including myself, are misunderstood by those in their own family and see their love for Linux as being some sort of unhealthy obsession. I may be obsessed with Linux, but I personally think that is better than being close-minded to other alternatives because of Microsoft's control over the general public's brain waves.

Most people don't seem to understand the pride and freedom...
