A little something to ponder about...

Posted 12-01-2010 at 05:20 AM by digitalmouse

Just realized I have a blog here, so I have to consider what I can use this blog for that would not normally be covered by the 3 other blogs I have - http://thedigitalmouse.blogspot.com being the most used.

one possibility is that the LQ blog could track my adventures at using a solar-powered linux device for my recumbent cycle touring and cycle taxi business. mounting a Linux box, linux-powered cellphone, or linux-powered netbook on a velomobile/taxi to give it a wired connection...

Well its that time of year again, stuck in the house with the snow, thought I would add a verse to my old Linux poem, feel free to add a verse.

Merry Christmas Linux

Twas the night before Christmas
And all round the house
the only things stirring
Were me and my mouse.

I was working with windows
It was making me fractious,
And I knew that quite soon
I would have to take actions.

It slowed and it stuttered...

Xmas tree lights.

Posted 11-25-2010 at 09:10 PM by peonuser

Well I grabbed some 2n3904 transistors to act as solid state switches and now have the computer controlled xmas tree (battery powered) lights up and running. Still have to tweak the circuit and the code a bit though. The basic circuit before adapting it. Planning to use the parallel breakout cable to connect things to the pc. http://www.instructables.com/id/No-s...ort-break-out/. Good place for code and interfacing: http://www.epanorama.net/circuits/parallel_output.html

People that complain about KDE4

Curious... I wonder, what is it about KDE4 that people don't like? New tools? New lay out? Visually different? Resource Hog? QT4?

This is all akin to wanting Windows 7 (Aero) to function just like XP or its predecessors... sure, you may be able to make the gui and theme look and feel like the previous, but all the system tools are going to be updated.

As with all history of computing, when something significantly changes, it's going to take time for programs to adapt...

My Linux Story

Posted 11-24-2010 at 08:29 AM by soppy

I guess I'm going to tell you my start with Linux and how I got here.

Well, it all started back in 2006. My step-dad brought home a laptop for me that someone had given him for me. It was a Toshiba something, and it had a Pentium 3 processor (833mhz) and about 256mb of RAM. By default, it still had Windows 2000 on it, while the desktop I had at the time had Windows XP. My friend had given me a SLaX Live CD, and I decided to give it a go. I really liked the way that it looked...
