Slackware is a great Linux distribution. It is fast, stable, and easily maintained. It is also easy to customize to users' tastes, which is a good thing because a certain amount of customization is necessary for a fully useful installation.

chnage the default openSUSE hostname

hi all,
if you hate that the suse installer called your pc linux-sqj4 or something then here is how to change it!
1) bring up a terminal
2)su to become root
3)vi /etc/HOSTNAME
4)change the bit before .site to whatever your new hosname will be by pressing i then deleting the bit that says linux-(random sequence)
5) esc :wq to quit and save
6) reboot!
note i used vi but you can use any editor if you do alt+f2 then kdesu kwrite /etc/Hostname then...

udev and network devices

After all these years, I finally figured out how to configure udev to load my network devices in the correct order.

In the past I compiled my own kernels and could force the card I wanted to be eth0 by compiling it into the kernel, then loading the card I wanted as eth1 as a module. This worked well. Of course, udev provides a "better" way, and now that it's five years old, I finally decided to learn it!

I've been looking for a simple and secure ('relatively secure', I should say) online service.

So far, I have my mind set on Amazon S3 for business purposes. A number of experts recommend it.

However, for personal purposes, I have settled on this one: SpiderOak. I like it for the following reasons:

In the absence of things to say...

I've been somewhat sparse in my comments over the past few weeks. I was waiting until the first of August so the I would have the funds to continue with acquiring components for the project I'm involved in. I'd rather not waste reader's time with nothing to say. So I'll write when it's pertinent to do so.

But hey! It's the First of August. And this month is my birthday. Really getting old here on this end. Maybe using old and end in the same sentence isn't the smartest thing to do....
