After several years as a perfectionist procrastinator... I have learned to recommend Ubuntu, NOW! JUST GET IT INSTALLED SO YOU CAN GET ON WITH LEARNING LINUX! No other distro comes close out-of-the-box. BUT. USE UBUNTU WHILE YOU LEARN ANOTHER, MORE TRADITIONAL DISTRO! Red Hat, BSD, Solaris, CentOS ( <---- my personal favorite... )

Just get started. If you like my title. Then ignore all the flames that this title is going to invoke from fan-boys and get Ubuntu 9.04 going and get...

Installing Reliance Netconnect 1x in Linux....

I have finally got the solution of installing supported kernel and its working for reliance netconnect.

First of all u have download the latest driver from the reliance netconnect on this web address(the drivers are generally provided in the cd u got with ur modem) :

hplip hpaio sane setup

I have a PSC 1610 All-in-one printer that always gets auto recognized when I scan for it as root but I always forget how to configure it for regular users.

1. add "usb 0x03f0 0x4811" to /etc/sane.d/hpaio.conf
2. ensure 'hpaio' is uncommented in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf
3. ensure the user is added to the 'lp' group! or whatever group owns the device.


My device is /dev/lp0.
you can type "ls -l /dev/* | grep lp" to see if...

Printing Saga Continues...

I took my printing problems to our local GNU/Linux SIG (part of Olympia Microcomputer User Group) a while back. Basically, I had an HP LJ 1300 connected to a WinXP machine and shared on our network. But the WinXP kept losing its connection with the printer...no idea how or why.

So someone at the Linux group had a small print server he said I could try. I set it up, installed the software to the WinXP machine, and voila! All the other computers (mostly Mepis 6.5, one Win98) found...
