MinMenu 0.10.0 Released

Posted 05-07-2009 at 05:20 PM by CoderMan

The source code for MinMenu 0.10.0 is available at http://indicium.us/cgi-bin/pages/get?view=minmenu.

The primary functional change is that the color themes for MinMenu have been moved into a separate plain-text file, which can be edited by the end user. End users may modify existing color themes or create new ones, and immediately select those themes from their local configuration file.

If you do create a color theme which you like, please e-mail it to me at webmaster@indicium.us...

... and so we come to Robert A. Heinlein. His novel Double Star won the Hugo Award for best novel in 1956.

I had no idea what to expect from this one outside my experience of other Heinlein works. I'd never read it before. Unfortunately, my experience of other Heinlein books has been a mixed bag ...

... but maybe many, or even most people can say that. RAH was and is a controversial figure. And I'd guess that that is how he wanted it -- my impression is that on some...

The Hugo Award Novels, 2: 1955, They'd Rather Be Right

This entry is going to be a bit of a placeholder for now, since it is difficult to find a copy of the 1955 winner for best novel, Mark Clifton and Frank Riley's They'd Rather Be Right.

The little buzz I have come across is that this is typically considered the worst novel to have won a Hugo ... which at least partially explains its scarcity.

The Boston Public Library has a copy, but I will have to go there to read it.

It's only an impression, but this...

The Hugo Award Novels, 1: 1953, The Demolished Man

Alfred Bester's The Demolished Man, the first novel to be awarded science fiction's Hugo Award in 1953, gets the award off to a stellar start. Although its Freudian conclusion / solution rings a little false and its vision of a future supercomputer is as silly as anything from the 50s, the novel holds up extremely well and is a crackerjack ride.

I think it was Damon Knight who (lovingly) opined that Bester's characters were a series of funny hats, but that he was so energetic a writer...
