OpenSUSE 11.4 continued

Posted 06-05-2011 at 07:58 PM by TwinReverb

Today I continued with a fresh 11.4 DVD 32bit of OpenSUSE. During installation I found the option to go with a LVM encrypted (i.e. LUKS+LVM) so I went with that after deleting all partitions on the machine. (I found out after install that it chose 256bit encryption. A little overboard for a netbook, but I don't mind so much.

So I got it installed, copied stuff back over from my backup external hard drive, and proceeded.

Slacker installs OpenSUSE 11.4

Posted 06-05-2011 at 04:46 AM by TwinReverb

So I figured I'd try OpenSUSE 11.4 on my netbook (Asus 900A) today, and write down my experience with it as I go.

First, when booting the installer, I noticed that during the configuration phase, when partitioning my hard drive, it picked some odd options (to me), like putting root and /home on extended partitions, etc. I thought to myself, no big deal, I'll custom partition with the root size it had decided (5GB). hiding the GUI of an application

Posted 06-03-2011 at 02:11 AM by neonsignal

The GUI of an X windows application can be 'hidden' by creating a dummy frame buffer:
Code:
Xvfb :display-number -screen 0 1x1x8
This frame buffer can then be used to run the application:
Code:
DISPLAY=:display-number application

I think that the sidebar is really confusing. When you click on an icon, it launches the app. You click on it again, and it brings that app to the top. There's no obvious way to start another instance (you have to right-click). If there are multiple instances of an app open, you have to go through two steps to choose it: first click on the icon, then on the instance you want. Why combine the unrelated concepts of launching a process and window management?

Second, the way the menubar...
