Making a bootable Live-DVD under Ubuntu

got me to worrying what I would do if my main boot disk failed. I keep my data files on a second hard disk, which I back up to an external drive on a weekly basis. I don't back up much of the boot disk.

Certainly something I should have is an alternate method of booting the machine. Although I know there are several...

Dealing with file names (oddly) starting with an hyphen

In a script or routine usage, you may stumble for some reason with a file starting with "-".

"ls *.lol" command in that dir will return error if the next character doesn't happen to be an option of "ls", and/or if it is an option, but the next part isn't coincidentally an "argument", which is probably unlikely.

The same applies for commands such as mv and rm.

but to deal with it you can issue something like

I found my old blog post here and thought I'd post this as a reply to myself.

I don't understand this thing people say, that Linux has to get easier to install before people will adopt it. I installed Arch Linux the other day, it doesn't even have an installer anymore, it's just a readme file with chroot instructions. Once it's done, sound and network have always worked out of the box for me, unlike in Windows where I need to download the network driver on another computer and copy...

iptables workstation config

Here's a decent iptables for a workstation that doesn't normally serve hosted applications. It is meant to just block the network while allowing the user to still use the network unhindered. If services will need to connect to your system then you'll have to open ports in the firewall.
