Refocussing on Linux OS'

Posted 09-06-2011 at 03:16 AM by Ken Martin

After a disconcertingly bad and completely unexpected (ok, ok, call me naive, but for a long while my Mac Book did just work) Lion OS experience, and not really wishing to pursue future costly Windows upgrades, I have decided to refocus on Linux.

I think I will try Fedora again. I am wondering what it is like running the freeware security product Prey. I must have a dabble during our forthcoming Southern summer. Still, Fedora is a bit bleeding edge for those inexperienced with Linux.....

To start, some gripes

Posted 09-06-2011 at 12:21 AM by SukiiPooru

I'm getting more frustrated as more applications forget that lovely middle button `swipe to copy and click to paste` tool. Is ti due to `windows` converts, now Linux developers, not having experienced the early days of terminal applications?

There is no "easy" transition to Linux.

Posted 09-05-2011 at 10:12 PM by ReaperX7

I've been using Linux on and off for the past ten years or so and at first, even I was very intimidated by the OS. It took a lot of researching and also a lot of trial and error before I settled in on my current distribution, Slackware. I've had the opportunity and unfortunate privilege of trying out other distributions that were more or less a migraine. Red Hat, Mandrake, SuSE, Ubuntu, and a few others I've forgotten over the years.

As a user of Linux I've been ridiculed in college...

Big Muddy Blues Festival

Posted 09-05-2011 at 03:51 PM by FredGSanford

Saturday and Sunday night, me and the wife went to the St. Louis 'Big Muddy Blues Festival' downtown on the Mississippi Riverfront...I had a wonderful time and the one band was super good, they ended the night with a Howlin' Wolf's song, Shake it for Me.

This is held every September but the first time I've attended it. I'll keep an eye out for it next year. I guess its the last outdoor concert to end summer.

Sticky issues with tar...

Posted 09-05-2011 at 12:24 PM by ButterflyMelissa

Tar does not unpack...well, the TTYLinux tar does'nt. It seems that the Busybox tar cannot handle all the tars around.

Since I try to assemble something from the bottom up, most (all? dunnow yet) software comes from gnu's site, so, untarring is a must.

Workaround: install the GNU tar. To do that I need to start up with a Live CD that has a good/working tar, download and untar in folders, and re-boot with TTYLinux and compile the software.

To do that,...
