Python - check if in IDLE

Posted 10-01-2011 at 05:28 AM by Snark1994

Another useful thing which I didn't realise before:

How do you get your python programme to check if it's running in IDLE or in the terminal? I tend to use the IDLE in Windows for debugging, and run programmes by double clicking so they open in the terminal.

There's not much difference between the two, but 'print'ing is slower in IDLE, and you can't use '\r' to overwrite things already printed.

Luckily, there's an easy way to check.

Further thoughts on M$ (No apologies for the $)

Posted 10-01-2011 at 05:20 AM by rich_c

In the past, I posted on why I don't hate Microsoft. I must have been feeling generous back then, because on reflection, there isn't a lot to like with that company... Here's a couple of recent news articles that illustrate what I mean.

The first one Is the Windows 8 UEFI secure boot debacle. (Here's an excellent blog post on the subject.) My concern is that Microsoft will quite happily mandate that hardware manufacturers enable secure boot by default and then let their 'partners'...

...well, part of it anyway.

Thusfar, I did this:
- partition the drive
- format the partitions
- make a root file system (folders & mountpoints)
- mount /dev/sda3 to /media/sda3
- mount /dev/sda1 to /media/sda3/boot
- mount /dev/sda4 to /media/sda3/home
- make a Downloads in the /root folder (on disk)
- prep a variable to be used as prefix for the config

Chain of Fools Coming Soon

Posted 09-30-2011 at 03:50 PM by wagscat123

Coming Soon...

I will be running a Chain-of-Fools experiment with SUSE Linux starting with version 9.1 (oldest freely available) going through all and any release of SUSE Linux. I will do both GNOME and KDE. The operating system list I am going through is as follows:

SUSE Linux Personal 9.1 (no gnome here since it is not included)
Novell Linux Desktop 9 (I am going through these as a factor change to make it work this time)
SUSE Linux Professional 9.2

An impatient padawan trips...

Wise words from Yoda, warning the impatient padawan to take small steps...

I mentioned the --prefix a few entries ago, well, this would be set to the mount folder and not the device, so the entry

Quote:
/dev/sda3
really should read

Quote:
/media/sda3
Quote:
DST=/media/sda3
...then, expand the path:

Quote:
PATH=/mediq/sda3/bin:[all points expanded with the mount point]:$PATH
...that should prove to be a bit better...
