Linux to USB – Installation methods
Many people like to run/test a Linux system without touching/changing their hard drive. There are a lot of installations programs out there for both Linux and Windows. Most of them doesn’t offer persistence though. Very little is written about the fact that the “ordinary” installation program for installations to hard drive (in some cases) also can be used to install a Linux system to a USB stick. Using such an installation method will of course give you...

How To Recover A Lost Root Password

Posted 02-09-2017 at 05:26 PM by Ztcoracat

This works for Red Hat so I'm not sure if it works for other distributions.

In order to recover the lost root password hit the 'e' key as Grub is booting up.

Look for the kernel line and add rd.break to the end of the kernel line and hit Enter.

Than mnt -o remount, rw /sysroot

Than type passwd and enter a new password and do that twice.

After that you will need to make a .auto relable file because SELinux labeling is wrong...

Slackware wins LQ's Members Choice Award: Desktop Distro of the Year 2016

Posted 02-08-2017 at 04:14 AM by GazL (GazL's Gazette)

Slackware has always had a strong and loyal contingent here on LQ. We have Slackware users here who have been using it for decades and who wouldn't dream of using anything else -- which says a lot: either about it, or them, or both, and I'll let you decide for yourself on that one. -- so it's no surprise that Slackware did well in the vote: it always does.

Posted 02-06-2017 at 01:04 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)
Updated 02-09-2017 at 12:00 PM by exton (Changes - New version)

NEWS 20170209 about exGENT
I’ve made yet a new version (20170209) of exGENT based on Gentoo Linux. Now with Xfce 4.12.1 and kernel 4.9.8. It is for the 64 bit architecture. I call it exGENT 2017 Xfce4 Live DVD. It replaces version 20160123. The ISO file is of 2590 MB due to the fact that this version has a lot of packages pre-installed. Despite this exGENT version 170209 runs surprisingly fast from DVD or USB. Even in VirtualBox and VMware. Faster than most other Linux live systems. All installed...

As well as using these LQ forums and blogs for valuable information, total newcomers to Linux may like to look at Linux Made Simple from the publishers of Linux Format magazine:
