Data Limits in 2015?

Posted 02-11-2015 at 08:57 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

I know Comcast has suspended their 250 GB limit and have been trialing different data plans, including one of the more idiotic ideas I've read yet (more on that in a moment), but I never bothered to actually read up on the stupidity that is taking place in the U.S.'s largest cable provider's upper management tier.

On first glance, lifting the 250 GB per month limit is a great idea. On the flipside, the way they are working around this is by raising the limit to 300 GB (gracias, amigos!...

NEWS 150211
A new and much better version of Exton|OS is ready. I have replaced kernel 3.16.0-21-exton with kernel 3.19.0-5-exton. (Kernel.org‘s stable kernel 3.19.0, released 150209). With kernel 3.19.0 there is no real need to use Nvidia proprietary graphic drivers since this kernel has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel.

Slackware-14.1-DnsCrypt Proxy 1.4.3

Posted 02-08-2015 at 09:49 PM by arniekat

How To Secure DNS with DNSCrypt-Proxy. DNSCrypt-Proxy secures your communication between your computer and a DNS Resolver. This particular setup optionally caches the DNS entries within RAM, which speeds things up for DNS queries. If you want/need to cache them on your hard drive, pdnsd would be a better solution.

Slackware-14.1-Pdnsd 1.2.9a

Posted 02-08-2015 at 05:17 PM by arniekat

Pdnsd is a proxy DNS server with permanent caching (the cache contents are written to hard disk on exit) that is designed to cope with unreachable or down DNS servers (e.g., in dial-in networking).

Create the following user and group. I picked a number so as to not conflict with the uid's-gid's assigned by SlackBuilds.org

# groupadd -g 313 pdnsd
# useradd -d /dev/null -s /bin/false -u 313 -g 313 pdnsd

SlackBuilds has version 1.2.7, but I used...
