Trek 3900 disc 2009

Posted 06-12-2010 at 03:52 PM by Lexus45

As you may know, one of my greatest delights is riding a bike. And I'm happy to say that some days ago I extended my 'garage' - I bought the second one, it's Trek 3900 disc 2009. And this is how my bike looks.

Another bike is Norco 125, 2008 year model, for street/dirt riding. I'm learning the basic street tricks. It's hard. Don't think that *nix-sysadmins are fat sport-haters, who only sit in front of their PCs and drink beer.

How to enable the Compose key in X

Posted 06-12-2010 at 11:33 AM by MTK358

Here I will show you how to enable the Compose key in X. It lets you type unusual characters like this:

ə k

by pressing the Compose key followed by a predefined sequence of keys. Here are some good references:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compose_key
http://www.hermit.org/Linux/ComposeKeys.html

Anyway, first you need to choose which key you want to be the Compose key. Then, open a terminal and enter the command "xev"...

A couple of surprising comments on Windows security!

Posted 06-12-2010 at 04:37 AM by rich_c

I've noticed a couple of articles of late from pretty authoratitive sources stating what a lot of us already knew. This being that Microsoft Windows is a security liability.

This first link is from Dell. It clearly states in point 6 of the page that Ubuntu offers more security than Windows. Also, further down the page, it lists Ubuntu's anti virus and anti spyware apps as unwarranted!* I hope this page stays up and doesn't mysteriously disappear within a few days...

On killing Apophis...

Posted 06-11-2010 at 06:26 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

The asteroid Apophis, named for the Egyptian god of destruction, is a very dangerous one, especially for its projected path. NASA traced its history and projected its future path. They found that it would make a close enough pass to Earth in 2029 to dip below our communications satellites! They also found, after further study, that it would make an even closer pass in 2036, close enough to potentially pass into Earth's atmosphere and out again.

There have been several studies about...
