This blog entry is for those who have no idea just where to start with Linux because they have no idea just what kind of *free* and open source goodies are just waiting to meet them. Here are some commonly used open source alternatives to proprietary apps:

Microsoft Office =, LibreOffice, KOffice or AbiWord

Adobe Photoshop = GIMP

Windows Movie Maker/Pinnacle Studio/Corel Studio = PiTiVi or Kdenlive.

iTunes = Rhythmbox + Ubuntu One...

Setting up my Webserver using LAMP

Posted 11-06-2010 at 11:16 AM by Focused4Success
Updated 11-07-2010 at 08:04 AM by Focused4Success (fixed error in php.ini)

The reason I started running OpenSUSE is to setup a development environment to build a LAMP based website. I installed OpenSUSE and setup Aptana Studio. Then I setup LAMP.

OpenSUSE has a pretty nice software installation manager. I wasn't aware of it until I read this article: SDB:Linux Apache MySQL PHP. It has a really nice description of how to install everything required to setup a PHP based Webserver with a MySQL backend. That what LAMP means: Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP.

Time Synchronization

I use NTP to keep my clock synchronized. The method employed works only if the computer has access to the Internet on a consistent basis, which is usually the case for my computer, so this method works fine.

Two steps are required:
  1. Configuring the NTP client to keep the clock up to date
  2. Making sure the system time is set properly

NTP is configured via the following procedure:
  • Click on the Application Launcher
  • Click on the Applications tab
  • Click on the System tab
  • Scroll

Full Screen Mode on a MacBook Pro

Posted 11-06-2010 at 09:09 AM by Focused4Success
Updated 11-12-2010 at 10:35 PM by Focused4Success (changed video mode.)

I use VGA Mode 0x377 to run OpenSUSE in full screen mode on my MacBook Pro. This is not ideal, because the Linux screen resolution is 1200x900x16, but, it pretty close to the LCD resolution which is 1440x900x32. This avoids the scroll bar that Parallels will create when using higher resolution than the monitor can handle.

After changing my video memory to 16MB, I am able to select 0x33d: 1440x900, 16 bits. (24-bit modes cause the X Server to crash).

The screen mode is configured...

Who is this Focused4Success Guy?

Hello all. I've decided to keep a log of my Unix and Linux escapades on my LQ Blog.

I've been a Unix guy since 1980. I got my first login while pursing an Information Engineering degree (INFE) at the University of Illinois Chicago Circle campus (UICC). I can't remember my login name, it was probably jpb. The computer was a PDP 11/45 with 256Kb of RAM. I don't know how big the disk was. It was running a modified Unix V7 kernel. The shell was... sh. The sysadmin, Ralph, had a room where...
