GNOME Shell 2.91: So far, nothing yet

Posted 10-09-2010 at 12:39 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

My hands-on testing of GNOME Shell 2.91.0 reveals that the proposed changes located here haven't gotten implemented -- yet. However, this is a VERY early development build of Shell 2.91, so give it some time.

I know it's 2.91.0 because I actually built it from the JHBuilds; you can't get it as a distro package. And even then, there's bugs that can cause the build process to fail, so I wouldn't recommend it to newbies -- at least not for now.

I like to program but sometimes it can be frustrating. First paying programming job was doing rpgii and databus on some Datapoint machines as a maintenance programmer eons ago. Though I do know several languages, I wanted to start using php to access mysql databases. Had lamp servers for many years using canned applications.

I started to write code from books like most people do and all was going fine. Then I hit a roadblock and the code did not work. I looked all over the web and...

DeskTop Publishing with OO.org's Impress/Presentation

Posted 10-08-2010 at 11:43 AM by SrDorothy

Well, it has taken me 7 months (since I last posted--on migrating from Win XP to Ubuntu 9.10)--but by gum, I think I've got it!

For a couple of months now, I've been doing my computer user group (OMUG or Olympia Microcomputer Users Group) newsletter using Presentation (OO.org 3.1.1) (running Ubuntu). I decided to give it a try because it seems much easier to place things on the page than in Writer. One thing that is missing in Presentation is the function of connecting text boxes...

2.91??

After thinking GNOME's next development branch was 2.33, I tried to navigate to its page on live.gnome.org. Upon trying to navigate to that page, I got redirected to this:

http://live.gnome.org/TwoPointNinetyone

What?? Just because it's the dev branch for 3.0 does not mean that they need to make such a jump in the development cycle release number. They were going to make 2.31 the dev branch, and I did NOT see any such jump in the release number; they were going to reserve...
