Why must I put up with this sh*t?

Yes, this is filed under "Existential Rants", but it's more of a general rant.

UFOs, aliens, "disclosure", gubmint conspiracies, etc...I can't stand it anymore!

My mother is utterly convinced that she's an "integral part" of some "spiritual mission" to "help the planet ascend" sh*t. On an almost daily basis I have to put up with her talking to friends over the phone about it all. It drives me...

My head hurts. Spent two hours fixing a foobarred email server software configuration. Also it is now more secure than it was.

Quick-and-dirty symmetric encryption

Posted 01-27-2011 at 10:53 PM by anomie

Nothing earth shattering here. Just a quick automation utility I put together using the venerable openssl.

The wrapper script does a couple sanity checks, and saves you from having to remember command options for enc(1). You can change _cipher to suit your tastes / baked-in support.

Updated my Dell GX1 PII server to Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. One or two of the old web apps are foobarred and need to be fixed. The apps I wrote still work though. The Firefly itunes sort of compatible streaming server still works. You can not live without music.

Updated my Wordpress blog ( with entries from an older blog. You spend any amount of time on a blog and it becomes a real body of work before you know it.

PostgreSQL and Indexes: a formula for...disaster?

I've noticed a ton of complaining about PostgreSQL's apparent lack of sanity when it comes to index usage, so I'd like to throw a few things out that explain the "idiotic" way PostgreSQL handles indexes.

First things first. If the table fits in a single page, YOU ARE NOT GOING TO SEE INDEX ACTIVITY. That gets more people than any other issue. If the table has 17 rows, don't expect PostgreSQL to bother with indexes. Using an index on a table that fits in a single page...
