New-Comer's Greeting

Posted 02-04-2011 at 07:55 AM by xeleema (A few bits & bytes)

Greetingz and Welcome to LQ!

I would suggest you familiarize yourself with how to use LQ, which will help you in asking questions. There's a section on "how to post" (I know that sounds really, really low-brow, but hey, even I learned a lot from it).
If you already know how to use BBcode to format a post, you can just skip to the list of supported tags here.

If you've never used a Linux command line before, here's a few links to help you move around...

My first "FOSS hack"

I was mildly annoyed at the fact that LTris only lets you choose between 50, 100, 200, and no limit (as many frames as the system can render at a time) as FPS options, so I took the liberty of changing:

switch ( config.fps ) {
    case 1: fps_delay = 20; break;
    case 2: fps_delay = 10; break;
    case 3: fps_delay = 5; break;

switch ( config.fps ) {
    case 1: fps_delay = 17; break;

Creating a virtual disk to "hide" files

Posted 02-02-2011 at 09:32 PM by binary_pearl

One of the many neat things you can do in Linux is to create a "virtual disk" (which is really just a file), and you can add other files to it. We use this at work to store an xml file into a virtual disk that are xen virtual machines use when booting to configure themselves. But you could also use this as a way
to more-or-less hide files.

So first: Create the virtual disk (The exmaple creates a 10MB disk) :
`dd if=/dev/zero of=/root/name_of_virtual_disk...

I can hear that train a'comin'

A few months ago the execs where I work gave me a new project. I was to take Version 4.0 of our flagship product and gather all of the performance data collected since 2003 (the beginning of time, as far as Version 4.0 is concerned) so I can run reports on it. Most importantly, I could run reports on *recent* performance data...and give the report to exec.

Ok, I'm cool with that. I have nothing to hide. I work late hours to finish up the report, and it's a smashing success. So...
