Reinstalled GRUB 2 to the MBR

Posted 05-17-2010 at 10:04 AM by ddalley

I'm not sure what happened to make LinuxMint 8 stop working the way it did, but I finally got both installs working again by reinstalling GRUB 2.

Pretty scary stuff to just turn on the computer one morning and not have an OS.

GNOME Shell vs. the Terminal

Posted 05-16-2010 at 12:32 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

I have seen posts to LQ that confuse the Terminal with GNOME Shell. They are two totally different things.

Let me tell you: GNOME Shell, which differs from gnome-terminal, is the proposed UI for version 3.0 of the GNOME desktop. Let me post a few screenshots:

Triple Boot goal: OS X, Gentoo Linux, and Windows 7

Posted 05-16-2010 at 09:26 AM by Seph64 (Seph64's Lair)

I am intending to install Linux on this Mac Mini of mine.

Well, actually it's installed. So it's already coinciding with OS X and Windows nicely.

Partitions:

90 or so GB for OSX
23GB for Linux
40GB for Windows

Not a lot of options for a 160GB drive anymore. I might purchase a bigger hard drive later, of course I will also need the proper tools to open the mac up. I saw how it is done.

One of the problems I ran...

Moving ubuntu minimize, maximize, & close buttons on Ubuntu 10.04

Posted 05-15-2010 at 10:04 AM by jkzfixme

As I drink my scotch after a long day of golfing I ponder life's great philosophical questions, such as the direction that Linux is heading, and if the wife is going to yell at me for that new scotch stain on the couch. Are we men, or are we mac users ? I mean seriously, whats with the buttons on the left ? Is it some insidious plot to ruin my optimistic attitude in life, like the KFC Double Down ? Is it a new direction that Ubuntu is going if it has already been trodden down by turtleneck wearing...

Why I Love Linux

Posted 05-15-2010 at 06:49 AM by rich_c
Updated 05-15-2010 at 07:06 AM by rich_c (Add section I forgot.)

There's all the usual reasons like "Free as in speech" and "Free as in beer" but for me, a couple of the reasons I love Linux are the regular discovery of great little apps that I find are already installed as standard when I start investigating how to perform a particular task. For example, I downloaded The Cathedral and the Bazaar as a PostScript. I couldn't find a reader for my Nokia N900, so after a little investigation I converted it using ps2pdf which I found already...
