Batch convert images to PDF

Posted 10-10-2010 at 05:48 AM by sag47

Recently (within the past year) I have helped a user with a problem converting hundreds of images into individual PDF files. I was pleasantly surprised to find imagemagick to effortlessly do this.

Command line tool imagemagick does what you need if they're images.
Installation:
Code:
sudo apt-get install imagemagick
Usage: (coverts all images into one pdf)
Code:
convert *.jpg foo.pdf
Usage: (converts each image into an individual pdf)

mplayer vs vlc

Posted 10-10-2010 at 01:52 AM by Web31337 (In The Middle Of Nowhere [edK's blog])
Tags dvd, mplayer, vlc

I tried everything: from downgrading codec libraries to removing ~/.vlc : nothing helped. The problem was when I was trying to watch DVDs and some avi files, it shown "buffering" on every frame, and, of course, I had a hang of few seconds every time. I've decided to try mplayer, as many people told me it's teh best.

GNOME Shell 2.91: So far, nothing yet

Posted 10-09-2010 at 12:39 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

My hands-on testing of GNOME Shell 2.91.0 reveals that the proposed changes located here haven't gotten implemented -- yet. However, this is a VERY early development build of Shell 2.91, so give it some time.

I know it's 2.91.0 because I actually built it from the JHBuilds; you can't get it as a distro package. And even then, there's bugs that can cause the build process to fail, so I wouldn't recommend it to newbies -- at least not for now.
