Well, since we're setting up a debian system, we may as well review how to compile and run hello world. We'll just think of this blog as a reference to look back at latter.

The C++ compiler is already installed on debian. It would be stupid for linux to not have one installed already.
It's called g++, and you run it like this:

g++ hellosource.c
and it will produce "a.out" in the directory from which it was run. a.out is...

Server latency

Posted 10-27-2011 at 08:26 AM by sag47

I wanted a quick and dirty way to determine server latency on my Kubuntu machine. This just parses simple output from ping and provides only the time values.

for x in;do echo -n "[$x]: "; ping -c 1 $x | head -n 2 | tail -n 1 | awk '{split($8,arr,"=")} END{print arr[2],$9}';done
[]: 0.576 ms
[]: 6.23 ms
You can put as many servers or IPs as you want in the for loop to get a comparison....

Recursively generate MD5 checksums

I wanted to generate MD5 checksums of a whole bunch of files in a directory. It turns out that this is not as straightforward as it should be. IMO it should be completed with: md5sum -br *

Unfortunately it was not as straightforward. I found this blog entry after searching for a while and adapted this to what I needed. To generate checksums, I used the following:

find . -type f -print0 | xargs -0 md5sum -b
(Note: for the above to work, "cd"...

day one (a buggy debian installation)

After crying a little bit more, I decided to return to the Debian web site and try to find another iso that actually installed something I could use. (needless to say, their website is very difficult to navigate, and their distribution layout, confusing).

Finally, I made it, I downloaded the first CD from that directory (apparently all you need is the first disc, and the other discs are there to confound dozers...
