Geekbench

Posted 02-05-2014 at 04:04 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

Because none of us have infinite time and money to throw at our computer hardware, it's nice to be able to look at a benchmark and gauge whether it's worth it to spend a little extra cash at a more powerful CPU, or one with a different memory subsystem, or a solid state disk, etc.

For this, we have system benchmarks.

For a system benchmark to be useful to a person, it must measure the system's capability to perform the kinds of tasks that person needs their system to...

UDF mount works on RHEL6 & CentOS6 but not RHEL5 & CentOS5

On receiving an install media today I tried mount it on my RHEL5 system:

mount /dev/hdc /mnt/cdrom

But that errored out:
mount: block device /dev/hdc is write-protected, mounting read-only
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hdc,
missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
dmesg | tail or so

In /var/log/messages I saw:

Dell Dset dependent on version of Dell OpenManage

Posted 02-04-2014 at 04:25 PM by MensaWater

During an issue overnight I attempted to run the latest Dell Dset version 3.5.1 for 64bit on RHEL 6.1. This didn't complete. It just hung.

By doing "ps -ef |grep dset" I was able to see the dset child of the dset bin file I'd kicked off.

By running "lsof -p <pid>" on that child's PID I was able to see it was creating a log for its run in opt/dell/advdiags/dset/report/temp1391539132.89/logs/dset/dset.log (note that the temp# changes on...

EXTON-MAN 2014 (Mageia 4) 32 bit Linux live cd with LXDE

Posted 02-03-2014 at 10:09 AM by exton (Exton's Blog)
Updated 02-05-2014 at 10:34 AM by exton

I’ve made a quick and simple remaster of Mageia 4, released 140201. Mageia has been the third most popular Linux system in the world for some time now (according to Distrowatch.com).

Who is EXTON-MAN 2014 32 bit LXDE for?
There is no official live Mageia 4 ISO with LXDE for downloading. (Only with KDE and Gnome). EXTON-MAN 2014 can be useful for people with older 32 bit computers who like to run an eminent Linux system (Mageia) live with some speed. Also of course for all people...

Reflections: Progress on OpenSSL, and Greybeard Wisdom

Posted 02-01-2014 at 03:01 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)
Updated 02-01-2014 at 03:03 PM by ttk

I'm finally pulling out of a months-long depressive funk, and touched my openssl patch again. On one hand openssl isn't exactly pleasant to work with (hardly any comments, bizarre formatting, obscure internal interfaces), but it felt good to be writing some C and making progress on my #1 project.

In addition to writing the code, I really should be documenting the whys and hows of the changes, like I promised my friend Chris. I didn't remember that until just now. Perhaps enumerating...
