I run a ventrilo server at home. My wife is an avid gamer (as am I, to a lesser extent), so ventrilo really helps with coordinating group gaming and in-game tactics.

There's just one problem...non-paid Ventrilo installs limit you to 8 people on the server at a time, and I'm too cheap to actually pay for a hosted unlimited vent server. On top of that, there is no native vent client for Linux or any of the BSD's, and most of the team we game with don't want to convert to TeamSpeak due...

Once again we are shown Microsoft knows how to fix their operating system, but chooses not to

Posted 12-20-2010 at 03:09 AM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

This drives me insane.

http://it.slashdot.org/story/10/12/1...ls-20-Released

Microsoft has just released version 2 of their free Security Essential antimalware suite. In the comments, people are praising how 'Great it is', how 'Microsoft is getting it right' and 'Linux sucks because no one makes an equivalent to this'.

Listen to me, you have all been lead.

If Microsoft can provide a free anti-malware...

Quite liking this as an alternative to the Ubuntu Gnome flavour. Different way to get around but reasonably intuitive. Desktop effects are pleasing and perform well on my little EEEPC. My Dell desktop doesn't have the grunt to run it very well, but the Gnome desktop does just fine on that.

Aim was to recycle an old Windows 98 Toshiba laptop to do something useful or fun.

- Using an installation of Slackware 13.0 and a wireless dongle.

- Script to display email inbox, facebook stream and a number of rss feeds, onto the console.

- Alternatively to play a slideshow of photos.

- Choose a radio station and play in the background, depending on the time of day.

How this was achieved:-

Chrome OS = Moblin?

Posted 12-17-2010 at 10:44 AM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

I recently have begun to feel that Chrome OS is becoming increasingly like Moblin in regards to look and feel.

Case in point: Many of the Chrome OS features have been backported to the Chrome and Chromium browsers, including the Apps section of the New Tab page and the Web Store as well as the Pinned Tabs feature.

Secondly did you know that if you install a theme the theme can change the background of the New Tab page? I have tried this myself:
