Why does Wi-Fi have to be such a pain in Linux?

Posted 12-20-2010 at 10:40 AM by ichase

I have read that this has been an ongoing issue in the Linux community. With a number of tools out there that will supposedly correct this, IE Ndiswrapper, WICD, WIFI Radar etc; you would think that this would be something that would work right out of the box. Heck, who is not using WiFi these days. (I know, there are some of you that are not....It's a rhetorical statement) Now I understand about proprietary hardware most in which is designed for use in W!nd0w$ so will not be recognized in Linux...

I run a ventrilo server at home. My wife is an avid gamer (as am I, to a lesser extent), so ventrilo really helps with coordinating group gaming and in-game tactics.

There's just one problem...non-paid Ventrilo installs limit you to 8 people on the server at a time, and I'm too cheap to actually pay for a hosted unlimited vent server. On top of that, there is no native vent client for Linux or any of the BSD's, and most of the team we game with don't want to convert to TeamSpeak due...

This drives me insane.

Microsoft has just released version 2 of their free Security Essential antimalware suite. In the comments, people are praising how 'Great it is', how 'Microsoft is getting it right' and 'Linux sucks because no one makes an equivalent to this'.

Listen to me, you have all been lead.

If Microsoft can provide a free anti-malware...

Quite liking this as an alternative to the Ubuntu Gnome flavour. Different way to get around but reasonably intuitive. Desktop effects are pleasing and perform well on my little EEEPC. My Dell desktop doesn't have the grunt to run it very well, but the Gnome desktop does just fine on that.

Photo

Aim was to recycle an old Windows 98 Toshiba laptop to do something useful or fun.

- Using an installation of Slackware 13.0 and a wireless dongle.

- Script to display email inbox, facebook stream and a number of rss feeds, onto the console.

- Alternatively to play a slideshow of photos.

- Choose a radio station and play in the background, depending on the time of day.

How this was achieved:-
