Kindle for PC? Why do you mock me?!?!

Posted 12-29-2010 at 10:50 AM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

Last night I decided to try out Kindle for PC (I'm thinking about purchasing an ebook reader and I'm having trouble deciding between the "liquid ink"-based Kindle and the touchscreen LCD nook). I get the PC software up and running on my WinXP machine at home, and make a startling discovery...Books in the "Popular Classics" section of the Kindle Store are...wait for it...completely free! Every page had half a dozen or so books that make me go "Hey! I remember reading that...

Fun with prime numbers

When I was in college I wrote a silly benchmark to test different programming languages. The task was to brute-force calculate the first 150,000 prime numbers. I wrote the program in C, C++, Java, Perl, and Python. I fudged an optimization on them all (the optimization: only run division calculations up to sqrt(n) for a given prime candidate n...since sqrt is costly to calculate, I used n/3 (a horrid estimate, I know...but it still cuts out quite a few tests)). Recently I got a chance to discuss...

Posted 12-28-2010 at 04:41 AM by lupusarcanus (Lone Wolf)

It literally feels like I'm crying. But I'm not. Doesn't hurt too awful much, but it does make it harder to see stuff.
(Side note: What an awful picture. I'm tired, don't feel good -- and it's late at night. On a positive note, I totally look like a deer caught in headlights.)
Other than this weird "thing" (pink eye maybe?), I got the usual cold. I sure don't hope my job application gets accepted and I have to go in there feeling like this.

Who needs a radio when I have a computer?

Posted 12-27-2010 at 09:31 PM by William (Dthdealer) (Whaling the FOSS)

I've been trying to record sound on my laptop for the past few days without decent results.

When first recording with the internal mike there was a decent amount of white noise in the background. I put this down to the mounting of the internal mike inside a device with many moving and vibrating components ( eg my fan and harddrive ). Audacity's noise removal filter did a good job but left me with some ugly artifacts that did not suit my needs.

Now I've tried an...
