I've been feeling kinda depressed (more so than usual ) over the past few days...I've just recently gotten over a cold, and I may actually still be getting over it, so that could be part of the problem, but I also think it may have to do with the fact that I haven't really done much *new* WRT computers/Linux recently. I mean, I took my old "clunker" computer (the one with no discrete GPU and about 256 MiB of RAM) and loaded FreeBSD on it (I heard about how Arch's init scripts...

One button internet shutdown....

Posted 01-30-2011 at 03:23 AM by peonuser

The U.S. congress is thinking about making it possible to shut down the tubes here in the US. That scares me that they would think it would even be needed to be done here. Is there something we are not being told?

"Tech world stunned at Egypt's Internet shutdown‎"

What if that were to happen here, could you survive? This is something to consider for those who insist to be all cloud based. Could you convert to an short term intRAnet? What options are...

Gloves for my feet - part 3

Posted 01-30-2011 at 03:16 AM by Tinkster
Updated 01-30-2011 at 03:25 PM by Tinkster (typo in distance.)

Today I wore my fivefingers for a ~ 12.5Km bush-walk. I was
initially a bit worried about stubbing toes, spraining ankles
and what have you ... nothing the like happened, even though
the terrain wasn't always easy. I did manage to lightly bump
my toes 3 times in the persuit, but didn't really do them any
harm - strangely enough. Going downhill on sharp rocks proved
a bit slower than I hoped for, but it was all good fun, and
when I've gotten more used to...

Upgrades never end.

Posted 01-30-2011 at 02:52 AM by peonuser

You have to keep up with the Jones with software. This is especially true with server upgrades. Upgraded Wordpress and that was pretty much a snap. Ledgersmb does not work any more because of php issues, but then I never really used it. Probably have to replace with Sql-ledger. One of the reasons for getting phppgadmin working. Moodle needs to be upgraded. Have a lot of classes installed in it. Have to backup the data. Want to start using Drupal, may just tank the existing 6.x install and go for...

GNOME Shell: Still not as mature as what the mockups tell about it

Posted 01-29-2011 at 09:56 PM by Kenny_Strawn (Kenny the one-teen comittee to stamp out Proprietary $uckware)

I hate it when people say that many of the changes proposed for GNOME Shell are already implemented when really the only mature mockup is the Overview relayout.

What about this mockup? How come the concept of a built-in Shell screen lock isn't reality?

How about this one? When will the shell actually replace GDM (or at least have a login interface that runs on top of it)?

And what about this? When is GNOME Shell ever going to have a built-in on-screen...
