UGH! I hate broken configure scripts/pkg-config setups (cairo-compmgr/vala)

Posted 12-30-2010 at 03:15 PM by lumak (Lumak's Guide to Random Things)

Seriously, one of the most annoying things about linux and open source is the constant changing of library names and versions and the inconsistent use of pkg-config or the lack their of!

OK so the configure script for cairo-compmgr does a check for vala which goes fine. It knows where the compiler is and what to do. But later in the script it uses pkg-config to double check the library dependencies and it can't find vala... why? well because the script checks for the library 'vala-1.0'...

HowTo: Run a more *UPDATED* Android On Your PC

There was an article in the Syndicated News forum that told how to run Android on your PC but referred to Live Android, which is DEPRECATED.

To get a more updated version of Android on your computer, you have to build it from source as there is currently no build for any PCs (aside from specific vendors) on the official site (which has moved to http://android-x86.org) that's greater than 1.6. However, thanks to the instructions on http://android-x86.org/getsourcecode, that shouldn't...

Fluxbox - Display Message on Desktop

Posted 12-30-2010 at 01:05 AM by lumak (Lumak's Guide to Random Things)

Well I couldn't find a good solution to displaying text on the desktop similar to what conky does without actually using conky with only text display, So I decided to go with controlling window settings based on the custom window class of an xterm. I think it came out nicely.

desktop.sh
Code:
#!/bin/bash
# Not -R is a vim flag for Readonly to prevent accidental edits.
xterm -rv -fn 10x20 -class DMsg -e vim /path/to/textfile.txt -R
.fluxbox/apps...

Posted 12-29-2010 at 10:01 AM by peonuser

Well now that what used to be called Russia is mandated to use linux, will we go from an arms or space race to a linux race? Food for thought...

Anyway the Insignia Infocast 8 inch tablet was on sale for sixty seven dollars, I had to get it. I have not opened the box yet. Lots of other things to do. If the browser still works with it, it will be a possible replacement for the ipad and or ipad touch.

Got a 1g switch for xmas. Needed that. My brother gave me his old linksys...

Kindle for PC? Why do you mock me?!?!

Posted 12-29-2010 at 09:50 AM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

Last night I decided to try out Kindle for PC (I'm thinking about purchasing an ebook reader and I'm having trouble deciding between the "liquid ink"-based Kindle and the touchscreen LCD nook). I get the PC software up and running on my WinXP machine at home, and make a startling discovery...Books in the "Popular Classics" section of the Kindle Store are...wait for it...completely free! Every page had half a dozen or so books that make me go "Hey! I remember reading that...
