More than two-and-a-half-fold decrease in ~/.thumbnails disk usage with pngnq

The shared thumbnail folder can be quite sizeable on linux (or whatever OSs follow the freedesktop.org specifications), you won't have much trouble finding forum threads of people asking if it's OK to delete it, because it's occupying too much space.

One of the reasons it occupies so much space is because the thumbnails are set to be PNG files, which are comparatively large by nature. Thumbnails for a folder full of JPEGs of moderately medium-large resolution (about 800-1200x800-1200)...

Memory overhead of Python and Perl associative arrays

Posted 05-06-2014 at 06:51 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

I've been measuring the relative memory overhead of perl hashes and python dicts (essentially the same data type, both associative arrays).

These measures are necessarily approximate, since they resize differently as the tables fill, but the overhead comes to about 57 bytes plus 76 bytes per element for perl, and 264 bytes plus 123 bytes per element for python. Both of these are for numeric-to-numeric mappings.

About halfway through this exercise, it occurred to me...

WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 140504?
1. ExLight is now based on Ubuntu 14.04 alias Trusty Tahr, 64 bit, released April 17, 2014).
2. I have upgraded the Desktop environment Enlightenment (Beauty at your fingertips) to version 0.19. Installed from source.
3. I have replaced kernel 3.13.0-9-exton with kernel 3.13.0-24-exton.
4. ExLight’s ISO file is now a ISO-hybrid, which means that it can very easily be transferred (copied) to a USB pen drive. You can then even run ExLight...

BeagleBSD?

Posted 04-29-2014 at 10:55 PM by rocket357 (Musings on technology, philosophy, and life in the corporate world)

I picked up a BeagleBone Black a few days ago and a microSD card.

I have been playing around with Angstrom (the default Linux install that comes with the BeagleBone) while waiting for my serial cable to arrive so I can install OpenBSD. I've decided that this gadget is going to go in my car. I have a few ideas for what I'd like to do with it, but primarily I think I'm going to attempt to wire up a cellular network + wifi to create a secure mobile hotspot.

Unfortunately...
