Posted 04-28-2015 at 06:49 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

NEWS ABOUT Exton|OS build 150428
A new and much better version of Exton|OS is ready. I have replaced kernel 3.19.0-5-exton with kernel 3.19.0-14-exton. With kernel 3.19.0 there is no real need to use Nvidia proprietary graphic drivers since this kernel has better support for the open-source Nvidia driver Nouveau than any other older kernel. The Mate Desktop is upgraded to version 1.8.1. I have also replaced Ubuntu’s installation program Ubiquity with Exton|OS Installer, which is a clone of...

install slack to lg x110 day 1

Posted 04-26-2015 at 11:15 PM by mrknify

Today I installed Slackware via an sd card. It did not go smoothly.

I used rufus usb key installer to put the 14.1 iso onto my sd card. Booted my LG x110 with the card, now my little netbook is my toy, I use it to install all manner of things before migrating them out. Previously I had installed two versions of Oz Unity on my netbook, they installed to duel boot with the netbooks Windows XP using grub. more recently I had been using Arch Linux via usb install to a SD card but that...

NEWS 150426 ABOUT AndEX Lollipop 5.0.2
My new build of Android-x86 Lollipop 5.0.2 has GAPPS pre-installed. I.e. Google Play Services, Google Play Store, Google+, Maps, YouTube and more apps. The ISO is called android-x86-5.0.2-lollipop-exton-kernel-GAPPS-721mb-150426.iso. I finally managed to install Google Play Services, which is needed for Google Play Store to run. You shall always use Google Play Store in AndEX version 150426. Only use Aptoide App Manager (which is also pre-installed) if...

How to measure peak memory usage

Posted 04-26-2015 at 08:46 AM by BenCollver

In the past, my method to measure peak memory usage was to boot a system, wait for it to become idle, run "free", run the program in question, then run "free" again. The difference is the memory usage. This method accounts for multi-process programs such as the LAMP stack, but it doesn't work as well for ephemeral command line utilities.

Today I ran across an easier way: Run the command line utility with /usr/bin/time -v. Example:

bash-4.2$ /usr/bin/time
