resetting the root password

When the root password has been lost, it can be reset as follows.

At the grub menu, select 'e' to edit, and add the parameter 'init=/bin/bash' to the linux line. Then 'ctrl-x' to continue booting. This will start the system into a command shell.

Then remount the filesystem root as writable, so that the password can be changed:
mount -n -o rw,remount /
Change the password in the usual way, then sync to disk:

Command line mystery

Posted 11-04-2011 at 07:38 PM by Mountaineer

In Ubuntu 11.04, I copied an mp3 file to mu home folder and then tried to use the terminal to move it to /Music. Didn't work. Trial and error may help. I used to know DOS pretty well, but this is elusive.

There's so much OSS around us it's hard to know what or where to start.

I just heard of a cool new open stuff: Newscoop, a newspaper content management system. I like to write and publish, I like CM systems. The problem is that Source Fabric, the releasing organization, has also released another really cool system, for radio broadcasting.

Similar story for this: Libre Graphics magazine. I love it, it's origins are a great example of what people can do on a whim and...
