Well, for work at least.

I use Debian Live (Jessie) to do my work, at work, rather than using Windows as installed. The boxes are unfortunately P4s, so not exactly modern and snappy.

For the past few months, I have been using a desktop which I replicated from Crunchbang. Openbox, tint2, a simple conky config and their keyboard shortcuts. I've been happy with it, and accessing the menu with <Super>-<Space> is great.

With a new live build, something...

Datashack Update - Shelves!

Posted 01-01-2015 at 10:06 PM by ttk (Unpopular Positions: One Geek's Take)

I finally got around to hanging a couple of shelves in the Datashack, and I don't think the crazy person who constructed the building used proper 2x4 studs. The shelf brackets had holes on either side, about an inch apart, and I had to toe-in the screws pretty hard to get both of them to bite into stud. They must have used 1x4's or 1x2's or some other wacky thing.

Anyway, two shelves are in, and the equipment on that side of the building is on them (though I need to figure out something...

NEWS 141229
All packages in MeX Linux have been upgraded to the latest version by 141229. Cairo-Dock has been added. The most important change is that I have replaced the install program Ubiquity with MeX Installer. The installation to hard drive is now so simple that a 10 year old child can do it. Watch a SLIDESHOW of the hard drive installation process.

MORE NEWS 141229
MeX Linux is once again based on Linux Mint. (I.e. Linux Mint 17.1 – codenamed Rebecca, released...

So, it suddenly dawned on me that the permission denied thing may be related to the noexec option in /etc/fstab (I'm mounting /var on a different disk than /). Turns out I'd used the following mount option: UUID=b5ae50cf-58e6-46f8-8313-6c1492dcc8ad /var ext4 defaults, users 0 0 and, while defaults implies exec, users instead implies noexec - as the latter is last, it will override the previous one. exGENT (Gentoo) live 64 bit with Xfce4 and kernel 3.18.1-gentoo-exton

Posted 12-27-2014 at 03:33 PM by exton (Exton's Blog)

NEWS 20141227
I’ve made yet a new version (20141227) of exGENT. Now with Xfce4 and Lxqt. It is for the 64 bit architecture. I call it exGENT 2015 Xfce4 Live DVD. It replaces version 20141130. Version 141227 of exGENT uses kernel 3.18.1. (The latest stable kernel). The ISO file is of 1690 MB due to the fact that this version has a lot of packages preinstalled. Among them four different Web Browsers: Firefox, Opera, Chromium and Seamonkey. Despite this exGENT version 141227 runs surprisingly...
