Building a Gentoo installation.

Four years ago I built my first Gentoo installation. It's a rather steep learning curve at first, but quite straight-forward for anyone with a technical background, and I soon had a basic install running. Within a few months it was the best-customized, most robust and most enjoyable working environment I'd ever used.

Some months later I went overseas for a time, and reverted to a package-based distro for practical reasons (Gentoo is source-based), and have stuck with it ever since....

Fedora 14 review on "low end" machine

I was personally very disappointed and disillusioned when I tried to install Fedora 14 on my system (1.5GHz Pentium 4, 256 MB RAM). The installer said that my system memory was too low for it to run. Anyhow, after some tinkering with the text based install - which doesn't offer much partitioning options, by the way - I was able to install it to my system. And that's when I was pleasently surprised !

I have been a Linux user since 1995. My favorite distro's are Mandrake (now called Mandriva), and Redhat. I was a big believer in a router software called Smoothwall, and was very impressed with it's capabilities. Open source software has become the most powerful software, with the least number of flaws in it, that is available. There are very few commercial offerings that can compare with the open source code. Open source's strength, lies in the number of willing people that work on it and hack...
