A Bit About Digital, Part II

Posted 07-08-2012 at 04:47 PM by theNbomr (Ramblings from the soapbox of theNbomr)

In Part I, we started to describe how computers use a binary system of storing and manipulating digital data. This is a continuation of that subject.

What we see isn't really what we have.

When we read text on our computer screen, we often see numbers like 0 and 1, just as I've used many times in this text. It may come as a surprise to some that when we see the glyph on the screen that we recognize as a zero, it is actually put there because the underlying byte that...

A Bit About Digital

This essay is to clarify some common misunderstandings about how digital data is created, stored and used.

In the beginning.
By now, we've all heard that computers 'only use ones and zeros', and mostly we've come to accept the apparent contradiction without really understanding what it means. The statement is true, if not somewhat over-simplified. The use of only 'ones' and 'zeros' is another way of saying that digital devices are binary in...

Setting the default volume for mplayer and gmplayer

Despite of having different config files, "config" and "gui.conf", this is one configuration that gmplayer inherits from "config", and will be ignored if set on "gui.conf", with the volume being reset to max and the line in the config file removed. That's one of those easter-eggs to give type As heart attacks. I think that's valid for Debian squeeze's gmplayer version, it may have changed afterward....

More Ben Nanonote

Posted 07-06-2012 at 04:08 PM by drask

I'm still playing with my nanonote. I still have not successfully managed to get Debian installed on it, but I did manage to install jLime, which is supposed to provide the best initial user experience, but I found it frustrating and went back to the default OpenWRT operating system. jLime kept complaining that the filesystem had not been unmounted cleanly and running e2fsck every time I tried to start it up, which I could fix but didn't feel like I should have to. The command line was also more...

Find and Prune

Okay, I've been frustrated with the prune option of the find command for a long time. I have a folder in my home directory called "mount" where I have directories onto which I mount the foreign filesystems I work with on a regular basis. I often know that there is a file containing a word or phrase that I need to find, and it is somewhere in my home directory. I've been trying to use prune to skip searching that particular folder, especially when grepping for something inside a file. For...
