With all the brouhaha from Phoronix lately about Steam coming to Linux, if and when it does happen, what (Steam) game are you going to play first? Of course, this is assuming there'll be more than 1 game on steam that will be available to be played on Linux come launch.

Well, I am hoping that Valve will allow Doom 3 to be under Steamplay when it concerns the Linux version (although, it may not happen since Steam users didn't get the ability to play the Mac...

powering down a USB port

Posted 06-08-2012 at 09:25 AM by neonsignal

A USB device can be powered down by setting the power level parameter:
echo suspend >/sys/bus/usb/devices/usb-device/power/level
However, note that the power suspend is done by the slave device, not by the port. Not all USB devices can be suspended (particularly parasitic ones such as lights that have no communications interface).

The device can be turned back on by setting it to auto mode:
echo auto >/sys/bus/usb/devices/

The nice thing about open source is that someone can take something that is very good and make it even better. I think Umplayer is a good example of this. Based on Mplayer, the team at Umplayer have found a way to make some of the more advanced features of Mplayer more accessible to the average user.

The recent release of Fotoxx 12.05, had me take a look at this for Linux only photo management suite. After having played with it for a number of days, I think you should take a look at it too. You should also have a look at the video's the author kornelix has put up on Youtube for this application as well. Some real highlights for me are the Panorama and HDR stuff. I tried to avoid showing features which could be found elsewere on Youtube. Fotoxx is licensed under the GPL version 3 as such...

Posted 06-07-2012 at 01:20 PM by allu john sudhakar

what is preload application:- Preload is nice little application that could make your linux system a lot faster. Preload is an adaptive readahead daemon. It monitors applications that users run, and by analyzing this data, predicts what applications users might run, and fetches those binaries and their dependencies into memory for faster startup times.
Preload packages are available for almost all linux distributions. And it is available by default in the Synaptic Package Manager and Ubuntu...
