NEWS 161019 about RaspEX LXDE for Raspberry Pi 3 and Pi 2
I have upgraded the whole system and replaced the old kernel 4.1.20 with kernel 4.4.21. RaspEX Build 161019 is a Linux ARM system for Raspberry Pi 3 and Pi 2. It is based on Debian Jessie (Debian 8.6), Ubuntu Yakkety Yak (Ubuntu 16.10, released 161013) and Linaro (Open Source software for ARM SoCs). In this new version (161019) I’ve installed Wicd Network Manager and replaced Chromium with Firefox with better support for YouTube. I...

WHAT’S NEW IN VERSION 161016?
NOTE: Version 161016 replaces version 160810.
1. ExLight is now based on Ubuntu 16.10 (alias Yakkety Yak) and Debian 8.6 Jessie.

There is more to sed(1) than s///

There are books written about sed(1), a stream editor which can filter and transform streams of text, because it can do a lot more than many suspect. It actually uses a very simple and compact language which, though limited, is concise. I used sed(1) for ages and ages without exploring more of what it can do. It's most often used only with the s/// substitution, but it also has other capabilities.

tmpfs nfs swapfile - use one computer's RAM as SWAP for another computer

Previously, I described how to use one computer's RAM as an SSD (OS drive) for another computer. Here, I describe how to use one computer's RAM as SWAP for another computer. Bear in mind that even a RAM disk over gigabit ethernet isn't going to be as fast as a local SSD, but it's still faster and much more responsive than a local spinning hard drive.

This technique of using another computer's RAM as SWAP is a great way to augment RAMboot, as described here:

Posted 10-12-2016 at 12:11 PM by the dsc (linux-related notes)

Sometimes I see questions related with that floating around, so here's a quick and lazy (just copying defitions from the manuals or sites of these programs) post on which hopefully someone in need of such tools will stumble as well.

"ionice - get/set program io scheduling class and priority"

"The auto nice daemon activates itself in certain intervals and renices jobs according to their priority and CPU usage. Jobs owned by root are left alone. Jobs are...
